A trip to Holland won’t be complete without tasting traditional Dutch herring. It’s not served in restaurants, so many travellers get confused – where to find it? In Holland herring is sold as street food. And here are the best places where you can eat herring in the center of Amsterdam!
- Frens Haringhandel. Singel 468/ Koningsplein (next to the Flower Market). Open: Monday and Sunday 12:00 – 18:00, Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 – 18:00. Frens Haringhandel on the map >>
- Stubbe Haring. Singel Haarlingersluis, 1013 (on the Singel canal, not far from Amsterdam Centraal station, direction Haarlemmerstraat). Stubbe Haring on the map >>
We’ve noticed that despite official opening times, many herring street vendors close quite early. So we recommend you not to postpone the Dutch herring tastings till evening.

Traditionally Dutch herring is served in pieces, with onions and pickles. You can also order herring on bread, in a sandwich (in Dutch it’s called broodje haring) if you feel like having a bit heavier meal.
Prices for Dutch herring range from 3,50 to 5 euros per piece. And it’s totally worth it!
Bon appetit, or as the Dutch say, eet smakelijk!
