Frans Hals museum in Haarlem

The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem is home to the world’s largest collection of paintings by Frans Hals, the master of the lifelike, loose-brushed portrait. Check ticket prices, opening hours, and travel tips – and plan your visit to the Frans Hals Museum.

New exhibition: Hals–Rembrandt

From 6 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, the Frans Hals Museum presents Hals–Rembrandt, an intimate exhibition bringing together 19 masterpieces by the two great portraitists of the Dutch Golden Age. 11 works by Frans Hals are shown alongside 8 by Rembrandt.

The show includes five loans from the Rijksmuseum, among them Rembrandt’s famous Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild (1662), as well as paintings on loan from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Mauritshuis, and other museums.

Book early: when the Rijksmuseum had its Frans Hals exhibition, tickets for most dates sold out before the exhibition had even officially opened. Hals–Rembrandt is an intimate exhibition with limited time slots, so we’d strongly recommend booking your ticket well in advance.

Entrance to the Frans Hals Museum is free with the Dutch Museumkaart and the I amsterdam City Card. If you don’t have either, we recommend booking your ticket in advance, especially around the Hals–Rembrandt exhibition, weekends, and school holidays.

The Frans Hals Museum address

The Frans Hals Museum is located in a former 17th-century almshouse (known in Dutch as a hofje) in Haarlem’s old town. The exact address is Groot Heiligland 62, 2011 ES Haarlem.

It’s very easy to travel to Haarlem from Amsterdam. A train from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem takes only 15-19 minutes and costs around € 6,50 for a one-way trip. If you travel straight from the airport, bus 300 runs directly from Schiphol to Haarlem in about 36 minutes (ticket price is € 6,50).

Haarlem train station

From Haarlem train station it’s about a 15-minute walk to the museum. For more on getting around, see our full Haarlem travel guide.

The Frans Hals Museum opening hours in 2026

The museum is open:

  • Tuesday – Sunday from 11:00 till 17:00
  • Closed on Mondays (except public holidays)

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing time. During the Hals–Rembrandt exhibition (6 November 2026 – 28 February 2027), we recommend arriving early or booking a morning slot, as the show is intimate in size and gets busy.

Why visit the Frans Hals Museum?

The Frans Hals Museum houses the largest collection of Frans Hals paintings in the world, alongside Golden Age still lifes and works by Haarlem’s other great masters: Judith Leyster, Cornelis van Haarlem, Maarten van Heemskerck.

I also really like the atmospheric museum building itself.

Hotels in Haarlem

For a stay close to the museum, consider Brasss Hotel Suites or Hotel ML, both a short walk from the old town center. If you’d rather stay somewhere quieter just outside the city, Duin & Kruidberg is a country-house hotel with free parking, set in the dunes between Haarlem and the coast.
