The Yayoi Kusama retrospective runs at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from 11 September 2026 to 17 January 2027, and it’s the largest Kusama exhibition ever held in the Netherlands: a posthumous tribute celebrating the life and work of the artist. Tickets are timed and have been selling out weeks in advance, so it’s worth booking yours before you read on.

- The surcharge of € 10 applies to everyone, including Museumkaart and I amsterdam City Card holders.
- Your start time is only for entering the Kusama exhibition itself. Once you’re in, you can stay as long as you like, and you’re free to explore the rest of the museum before or after at no extra restriction.

- Become a Friend of the Stedelijk, an annual museum membership worth it if you visit often.
- See Kusama’s work at the Moco Museum instead, a short walk from the Stedelijk.

About the Kusama exhibition
This retrospective spans Kusama’s full career, from her signature polka-dot works to pieces rarely seen outside Japan. It includes several Infinity Mirror Rooms, among them a new installation created specifically for this exhibition, and works that have never before been shown in Europe.
The exhibition also includes painting, sculpture, drawing, fashion, collage and documentation of Kusama’s happenings from the 1960s.

Full curatorial details are on the Stedelijk’s exhibition page, if you want to read more before you go.
The Stedelijk in Amsterdam is located right on Museumplein, next to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, with the Moco Museum a short walk away, so it’s easy to combine with a bigger museum day. By the way, you can see Kusama’s work at Moco too.
Opening hours
The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, including holidays. There are two different cut-off times worth knowing, since they’re easy to mix up:
- General Stedelijk museum entry: last entry at 17:45.
- Kusama exhibition start time: your ticket’s timeslot must be for 16:45 or earlier. After that, you can still visit the rest of the museum, just not the exhibition itself.

How to get to the Stedelijk Museum
By public transport
From Amsterdam Centraal, take tram 2 (direction Nieuw Sloten) or tram 12 (direction Amstelstation) and get off at Museumplein. You can also take metro 52 to De Pijp and switch to tram 3 (direction Zoutkeetsgracht) or tram 12 (direction Centraal Station) for the last stretch. Check our guide to public transport in Amsterdam if you still need a ticket or travel card.
By car and parking
The museum’s address is Museumplein 10, 1071 DJ Amsterdam. If you’re driving, the Q-Park garage under Museumplein is the easiest option. There’s also a dedicated disabled parking spot at Paulus Potterstraat 13, right by the group entrance.

What are the opening hours during the Kusama exhibition?
The museum keeps its regular hours during the exhibition: daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with general entry until 17:45. Your ticket’s timeslot for the Kusama exhibition itself needs to be 16:45 or earlier.
How much does a visit to the Yayoi Kusama exhibition cost?
A combined ticket (museum + Kusama exhibition, surcharge included) costs € 32,50 for adults, € 17,50 for students with CJP or EYCA, and € 10 for Museumkaart, I amsterdam City Card or GoCity Pass holders. It’s free up to age 18 and for VriendenLoterij members. A cheaper museum-only ticket without the Kusama exhibition is also available.
Do I need a separate ticket for the Infinity Mirror Rooms?
No, your regular Kusama exhibition ticket covers all the Infinity Mirror Rooms. Since space inside them is limited, expect some waiting time even with a valid ticket.
How long can I stay in the Infinity Mirror Rooms?
Around 25 seconds per room, though this can vary depending on how busy it is. It’s a quick turnaround by design, so expect some waiting time in line even with a valid ticket.

What’s the best time to visit?
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter. This is one of the most popular exhibitions at the Stedelijk, so book an early start time if you can.
Can I take photos?
Yes, photos and video for personal use are allowed, also inside the Infinity Mirror Rooms. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks aren’t permitted.
Does my Kusama ticket also include the rest of the Stedelijk Museum?
Yes. Your combined ticket covers the full Stedelijk Museum collection as well as the Kusama exhibition, not just the exhibition itself. Your booked timeslot only applies to entering the Kusama rooms; you’re free to explore the rest of the museum before or after with no extra restriction.
Is the Kusama exhibition still on in 2027?
Yes. The retrospective runs from 11 September 2026 through 17 January 2027, so it’s open to visitors across both years. Tickets for January 2027 dates work exactly the same way as for 2026.
How long should I plan for a visit?
Budget around 2 hours for the Kusama exhibition itself. Add extra time if you also want to see the rest of the Stedelijk’s permanent collection, since your ticket covers that too.
What if I’m late for my ticket’s start time?
Your ticket’s start time is when you’re allowed to enter the Kusama exhibition, so make sure you arrive on time, entry can’t be guaranteed if you’re late. If you do arrive after your start time, speak to a staff member; you may need to wait until space becomes available. Before and after your visit, you’re free to explore the rest of the museum, and once you’re inside the exhibition, you can stay as long as you like.
Do I still need a start-time ticket if my entry is free?
Yes. A start-time ticket is required and guarantees entry, even if you qualify for free admission (for example, under 18 or a VriendenLoterij member). The one exception is Friends of the Stedelijk, who can enter at any time without booking a slot.
Can I touch the artworks?
No. Artworks, installations and display cases must not be touched, including inside the Infinity Mirror Rooms.
