How to get from Amsterdam cruise port to the city center?

How do you get from Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the main Amsterdam cruise ship terminal, to the city center? Good news: if you’re arriving on a cruise ship here, you’re already in Amsterdam. PTA sits right in the Eastern Docklands, a 10-20 minute walk or short tram ride from Centraal Station. No transfer to book, no schedule to plan around.

If your cruise docks at PTA (address: Piet Heinkade 27, 1019 BR Amsterdam) rather than IJmuiden, you have the easy version of this trip. PTA is the main cruise port in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and regularly welcomes Celebrity Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Virgin Voyages, and Ambassador Cruise Line, as well as most river cruise ships.

Which ships are in on a given day varies, so check the Amsterdam cruise calendar on your cruise line’s own website or app for exact call dates.

Which Amsterdam cruise port am I at?

So where do cruise ships dock for Amsterdam? Check your cruise documents, three different docks all get called Amsterdam:

  • Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is in the city center, Piet Heinkade.
  • IJmuiden (Felison Cruise Terminal) is 25 km outside the city.
  • De Ruyterkade, just behind Centraal Station, is used by river cruises, not ocean ships.

How to get from PTA to Centraal Station: on foot or by tram

Can you walk from the Amsterdam cruise terminal to the city centre? Yes, easily. Walking takes 10-20 minutes along the IJ river. It’s an easy, well-signed route. You can also take tram 26 stops nearby (Rietlandpark) if you’d rather ride. Some ships also offer a free shuttle bus between the terminal and Centraal Station every 15-20 minutes while in port, check your cruise documents to confirm.

Getting around Amsterdam once you’re there

Trams, buses, and the metro cover the whole city, and you can tap in with a bank card. See our guide to public transport in Amsterdam for routes, tickets, and OV-pay (tap in, tap out with your bank pass).

PTA to Amsterdam center by taxi

A taxi from PTA to the center takes 10-15 minutes and costs roughly €20-40. It’s worth it if you’re short on time, have limited mobility, or heavy luggage. Otherwise the walk is just as fast once you count waiting for a car.

Private transfer from PTA

For a guaranteed pickup with luggage help, you can also pre-book a private transfer, mainly useful if you’re heading somewhere outside the center rather than into Amsterdam itself.

Doing a pre- or post-cruise night? You don’t need to go far. Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre is on the same street as the terminal, Piet Heinkade 11, about a 5-minute walk, with rooms overlooking the IJ.

About IJmuiden cruise port

Docked in IJmuiden instead? That’s a different trip: the Felison Cruise Terminal is about 25 km from Amsterdam, a real transfer by bus, taxi, or private car rather than a quick walk, and it eats into your free time in the city. See our IJmuiden cruise port guide for transport options and prices.

FAQ

How do I get from the cruise port to the Anne Frank House?

To get from Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (Piet Heinkade 27) to the Anne Frank House (Westermarkt 20), take the 20-minute tram, or walk about 30 minutes via Amsterdam Centraal Station. The total distance is about 3.5 km.

How far is the cruise port from Amsterdam city centre?

If your ship docks at the downtown Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, you’re about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles), a 10 to 15-minute walk, from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Some ships dock further away in IJmuiden instead, which is 30 to 40 kilometers west and takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach.

Is Amsterdam walkable from the cruise port?

Yes, if your ship docks at the central Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA). It’s a flat, easy 10 to 15-minute walk from the terminal to Amsterdam Centraal Station, and another 15 minutes into the main city center.

Do I need to book museum tickets before my cruise?

Yes, especially for the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum, both release timed tickets weeks ahead and sell out fast. See our guide to Amsterdam museum tickets for booking windows.

Where can I buy canal cruise tickets on arrival in Amsterdam?

You can buy canal cruise tickets on arrival in Amsterdam, at the dock or from a kiosk near Centraal Station, but the classic routes sell out on busy, sunny days, so it’s safer to book online before you leave the terminal. See our canal cruise prices and tickets comparison for all operators, or go straight for the Lovers 1-hour canal cruise from Centraal Station, the closest departure point to PTA.

Can you recommend hotels near the Holland America cruise port in Amsterdam?

Holland America Line calls at both Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) and IJmuiden, depending on the itinerary, so double-check your cruise documents for which port your ship actually uses before booking a hotel. If you’re at PTA, these three are all a short walk from the terminal: Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre (5 minutes), Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam (11 minutes), and DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station (13 minutes). If your documents say IJmuiden instead, see our IJmuiden cruise port guide for options closer to that terminal.
