Which company to choose for a canal cruise in Amsterdam?

My advice is simple: don’t overthink the cruise company. There are dozens of canal cruise operators in Amsterdam (Lovers, Blue Boat, Stromma, Starboard Amsterdam (nice affordable luxury boats), Captain Jack, KINboat and many others).

But for most visitors the type of cruise matters more than the company itself. You only need to choose between six types: classic sightseeing cruises, luxury small-group boats, dinner cruises, wine & cheese cruises, private boat rentals and hop-on hop-off boats.

Amsterdam canal cruise options, from sightseing and open boat cruise to wine and cheese cruise

Whether you choose Lovers, Stromma or another well-known operator, the canals are largely the same. Focus on the experience you want rather than spending hours comparing companies.

Is a canal cruise in Amsterdam wheelchair accessible?

Wheelchair-accessible departures are limited and usually require booking a specific time slot in advance. Blue Boat is the only Amsterdam canal cruise operator with wheelchair-accessible boats, so if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair, you will need to reserve ahead of time.

Wheelchair-accessible sailings run at 11:00, 12:30, 14:30 and 16:00. When you book one of these time slots, mention in the booking’s note field that a wheelchair user will be joining, so the crew can prepare the right boarding spot. After the booking, contact Blue Boat customer service (reservations@blueboat.nl) to ensure an accessible boat is assigned to your time slot.

Canal cruises in Amsterdam: what are the best boarding locations?

Hop-on hop-off canal cruise in Amsterdam – is it worth it?

A hop-on hop-off canal cruise is absolutely worth it in Amsterdam. Seeing the city’s historic canal houses from the water is a great experience, and the flexible format lets you explore at your own pace. Skip the hop-on hop-off bus, though – in Amsterdam, buses are not allowed in much of the historic city center, so you won’t see as much.

What’s the difference between the hop-on hop-off bus and boat in Amsterdam?

The boat runs on the canals and gives you the classic view of Amsterdam’s historic canal houses, while the bus runs on the streets and can reach a few sights further from the center. For most visitors the boat is the better choice: buses aren’t allowed in much of the historic city center, so you’ll see far less of what makes Amsterdam Amsterdam from a bus seat. If you need to reach something outside the center, combine a canal cruise with regular public transport instead.

Where can I buy canal cruise tickets on arrival in Amsterdam?

Yes, you can buy tickets at the docks when you arrive, most companies have a ticket kiosk near their departure point. But booking online in advance is almost always the better option: it’s usually about €5 cheaper per ticket than paying at the counter, and you avoid the risk of your preferred time slot selling out. For the standard 1-hour cruise, book the Lovers cruise on Tiqets ahead of time and just show up at your chosen slot.

What is a Water Colors Cruise in Amsterdam?

The Water Colors Cruise is a canal boat tour that runs during the Amsterdam Light Festival, taking you past the festival’s illuminated art installations along the canals. The 2026/2027 festival season runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, and tickets are already available. See our Amsterdam Light Festival cruise recommendations for the best options.

Can I get seasick on an Amsterdam canal cruise?

It’s very unlikely. Canal cruise boats sail mainly on Amsterdam’s canals, where the water generally stays very calm.

Is there a canal cruise in Amsterdam with unlimited drinks?

Yes, several operators in Amsterdam offer canal cruises with unlimited drinks included. The Amsterdam canal booze cruise includes unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks, while the luxury cruise with unlimited cocktails and snacks adds Spritzers, Prosecco, beer and wine. Alcoholic drinks are restricted to guests 18 and older, while unlimited soft drinks are available to everyone.

Which canal cruise in Amsterdam is least expensive?

The standard 1-hour Lovers cruise from Central Station is the one that’s least expensive, and it’s often even less online: booking it on Tiqets can bring the price down to around €13 per person.

Is there a dinner cruise available on the Amsterdam canals?

Yes – Amsterdam has several canal dinner cruises, from a relaxed 3-course saloon-boat dinner to a livelier 4-course cruise; see our full guide to Amsterdam dinner cruises for menus, prices and booking.

Enjoy your visit to Amsterdam!
