The Van Gogh Museum is one of my favourite places in Amsterdam, and Vincent’s story is what makes the paintings come alive. Who was he writing to? Why all those sunflowers? A good guide answers exactly that, and turns a busy museum visit into his life story, told in an hour or two.

The official Van Gogh Museum guided tour
This is my favourite value pick. For € 45 you get your entrance ticket plus a guide from the museum itself, in a group of no more than 15 people. In about 60 minutes you walk past the big names, like The Potato Eaters and Sunflowers, and hear how Vincent’s life shaped his style. Pick your date for the official tour:

Semi-private guided tour in English
Want more time and more questions? The semi-private tour takes about 2 hours, in a small group with a live English-speaking guide, and your entrance ticket is included. Travellers rate it 4.8 out of 5. You meet outside Cobra Café at Hobbemastraat 18, on the Rijksmuseum side of Museumplein, so bring a photo ID.
Private Van Gogh Museum tour
Travelling as a family, or celebrating something special? With a private tour the guide is only yours. You set the pace, kids can ask all their questions, and the guide can focus on what you love most. Prices start at € 190 for the group, entrance tickets included.
Van Gogh tickets sold out? Try a guided tour
Here’s a trick many visitors don’t know: guided tours have their own places, separate from the regular timeslots. So when the normal tickets are gone for your date, a tour can still get you in. Check the official tour first, then the semi-private one.
More ways to get in on a sold-out day, like last-minute slots and the canal cruise combi ticket, are in my guide to Van Gogh Museum tickets and on Van Gogh Museum sold out: what to do.
Guided tour or multimedia guide?
Both are good, they just suit different people. Choose a guided tour if it’s your first visit, you like stories more than labels, or you want someone to steer you through the crowds to the highlights. Choose the multimedia guide (€ 30,75 with entrance) if you like to wander, linger where you want and skip what you don’t. And if you already know your Van Gogh, a plain € 27 ticket is all you need.

My tips for your Van Gogh Museum tour
- Be early. Tours start on time, so arrive 10 to 15 minutes before at the meeting point.
- Travel light. Bags larger than 45×25×25 cm and wheeled suitcases may be refused. Leave them at Lockerpoint on Museumplein.
- Coming with kids? Museum entry is free under 18, but tours are usually priced per person, so check the child price when you book. A private tour is the easiest with young children.
- Make a museum day of it. The Rijksmuseum is a 5-minute walk away, and the Kusama exhibition at the Stedelijk runs until 17 January 2027.
- Check the opening hours before you pick a time: see the full Van Gogh Museum opening hours for Christmas and 2027.
