About the Chez Matisse exhibition
Henri Matisse was one of the defining painters of the 20th century, a pioneer of modern art known for his bold use of colour and, later in life, his large-scale paper cut-outs. Chez Matisse: Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou is co-organised with the Centre Pompidou in Paris and draws on its Matisse holdings, one of the most comprehensive collections of his work anywhere in the world.
The exhibition brings together more than 80 works and places Matisse in dialogue with contemporaries and the artists he went on to influence, among them Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard and Le Corbusier. A centrepiece of the show is La Blouse roumaine (1940), a rare masterpiece loan, alongside recurring Matisse motifs such as windows and his instantly recognisable use of colour.
Full curatorial details are on the H’ART Museum exhibition page, if you want to read more before you go.
If your travels also take you to France, the Centre Pompidou has a sister site in Lorraine: the Centre Pompidou-Metz runs its own rotating exhibitions year-round, drawing on the same collection.

H’ART Museum (formerly Hermitage Amsterdam) sits right on the Amstel river, a short walk from Waterlooplein and the Rembrandt House. It’s an easy add-on to a canal-side museum day, with its own Grand Café if you want to take a break between galleries.

If you’re building a full day of art, the Stedelijk Museum’s Yayoi Kusama retrospective is running at the same time as Chez Matisse, just a short tram ride across town, so the two are easy to combine into one Amsterdam museum day.
How to get to H’ART Museum
By public transport
From Amsterdam Centraal, take tram 14 to Waterlooplein, right by the museum entrance. You can also take metro 51, 53 or 54 to Waterlooplein station and use the Hortusplantsoen exit. Check our guide to public transport in Amsterdam if you still need a ticket or travel card.
By car and parking
The museum’s address is Amstel 51, 1018 EJ Amsterdam. Cars, buses and taxis can’t stop directly in front of the museum, use Nieuwe Keizersgracht 1 instead, about a minute’s walk away. The nearest parking garages are Stadhuis/Muziektheater, Waterlooplein and Markenhoven, all within walking distance.
The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with three public elevators and three accessible toilets. Two disabled parking spaces are available by reservation, and registered guide dogs are welcome. Wheelchair and walker rentals can be arranged in advance by emailing mail@hartmuseum.nl.
